The Law And You

You are breaking the law if you pour untreated waste into the drains.

Drain with untreated waterNo person shall discharge or cause to be discharged to any city sewer wastewater or pollutants that cause, threaten to cause or are capable of causing… obstruction to the flow in city sewers.

Water companies are within their rights to prosecute under section 111 of the Water Act 2003, as it is an offence to pour into a sewer any material, which could interfere with its free flow. Any restaurant or catering facility found in contravention of the law and unwilling to change their working practice could face a heavy fine.

FOG is an environmental waste pollutant and is classified as trade effluent, it is therefore a requirement that it is either eliminated entirely or pre-treated before it enters the sewerage system.
